FINAL TRIBUTES

MR JAMES O’BRIEN 6 THOUSANDS OF MOURNERS p.A. GREYMOUTH. Oct. 2. With the district mines idle and business at a standstill for the duration of the ceremonies, thousands lined the Greymouth streets this morning in fine but threatening weather to pay a last tribute to the late Minister of Transport, Mr O’Brien, who was accorded a State funeral at the Karoro Cemetery. St. Patrick’s Church was crowded for the solemn High Mass. The casket was borne from the church to the hearse in the presence of a densely-packed throng by national and local officials of the Labour Party and representatives of the United Mine Workers, led by the Greymouth Municipal Band. The mourners included the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and other members of Cabinet, representatives of both political parties, including the Leader fcf the Opposition, Mr Holland, departmental officers, representatives of every industrial and workers’ organisation, local authorities, and all sections of the community. Immediately followed by six lorries carrying the wreaths, the hearse passed slowly between lines of schoolchildren, behind whom were packed a large percentage of the population of Greymouth and district.
