ENGLISH VILLAGE SOLD
PICTURESQUE CASTLE COOMBE LINK WITH DOMINION FORCES N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 9.30 p.m. LONDON, Oct 2 The picturesque village of Castle Coombe, near Chippenham, where the New Zealand Forestry Unit had its headquarters for a period during the war, has been sold by auction. Villagers crowded into the town hall at Chippenham and applauded one anothers’ successful bids for their own homes. , , .. One woman, aged 67, whose family had lived in a cottage for 200 years, paid £6OO. One man bought the police station. “I will give the police notice to quit,” he said. ' The Lady of the Manor, Mrs K. R. Maurice, was glad that many of her old tenants were able to buy their homes, but was disappointed that nobody had bought the village intact There were no offers when it was put up for £36,000, but when offered m lots it realised £39,000. The post office, bakeries, a general store. tvlo inns and 40 cottages were sold. There was no offer for the manor house itself with 25 acres of woodland. It was withdrawn at £I4.OUU.
