FALL IN TUNNEL
WRONG DOOR OPENED MAN’S REMARKABLE ESCAPE Mr Charles Frewin, of Invercargill, had a remarkable escape from death or serious injury when he fell from the Dunedin-Invercargill express in the Caversham tunnel on Sunday. Mr Frewin, who had been on a visit to Dunedin with his wife, left by the 5.20 p.m. express, and while the train was passing through the tunnel he opened the side door of a carriage and was hurled to the ground, receiving a few bruises and a cut on the head. When the express arrived at Mosgiel Mrs Frewin became alarmed at he? husband’s non-appearance, and she communicated with the guard. A search was made along the track by a railway employee, who was greatly relieved when he saw Mr Frewin emerge from the tunnel. Mr Frewin was covered with soot and grime, and probably had his suit ruined, but. no doubt, he considered it a small price to pay for having escaped with his life.
