DAFFODIL DAY

PLUNKET SOCIETY’S EFFORT STREET APPEAL IN CITY Since its inauguration by the late Sir Truby King in 1907, the Plunket Society has been the greatest factoi in reducing New Zealand’s infant mortality rate to the lowest in the world. Few' worthier conceptions have been formed in the mind of one man and, with its fortieth anniversary recently celebrated, the society has reason for pride in its notable record. On the first Friday in October each year the public has an opportunity to recognise the society’s work by supporting Daffodil Day, which is to be observed to-day. Voluntary workers from the Central Committee and sub-branches will combine in an effort to raise funds by the sale of flowers, produce and badges, and to this end nine street stalls—six in the city and three in the suburbs—together with a shop near Arthur Barnett’s, will be in operation throughout the day. The proceeds will be devoted to the extension of the society's work in the city and surrounding districts. Large quantities of daffodils have been obtained from Dunedin and Lawrence, and will be sold at the stalls, while the shop is well stocked with vegetables and produce. The considerable expansion of the society’s activities, together with the increasing cost of equipment and maintenance, make it all the more desirable that this endeavour should be accorded full public support.
