ENDURANCE TEST

ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM COMPLETED BY PERUVIAN Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Sept. a. Daniel Carpio, a Peruvian, reached Shakespeare Beach, Dover, just before 1 a.m. His official time of swimming the Channel was 14hr 46min. A Frenchman, G. Michel, holds the record of llhr smin. Strong tides made the swim difficult, and Carpio was within five miles of the English coast for nearly eight hours. Carpio, who swam the crawl stroke throughout, said the last few hundred- yards were the worst, as he was then feeling ill, having swallowed a lot of water. His only food while in the water was glucose, hot water, crushed grapes and sugar. An earlier message stated that Carpio began his attempt to swim the English Channel from Cape Griz Nez at 9.45 a.m. and expected to reach the English coast at about 10 p.m.
