GANDHI BREAKS FAST ASSURANCE FROM COMMUNITY LEADERS CALCUTTA, Sept. 4. Mr Gandhi has agreed to break his fast. He took sweet lime juice. He had taken only water for three days. Calcutta was quiet to-day for the first time since September 1. Earlier, the entire North Calcutta police force numbering 500 began a 24-hour fast in sympathy with Gandhi’s fast. The most important police officers in the district, including Europeans and Anglo-Indians, are taking part. The police continued their duties. Groups of youths laid hand grenades, Sten guns, and other weapons at Gandhi’s feet .after he ended his 73hour “peace or death fast.” Gandhi, before breaking his fast, obtained an undertaking signed by Hindu, Moslem, and Sikh community leaders in Calcutta that they would be responsible for the preservation of peace..
