SPRING CROPS

ACTIVE PREPARATIONS Good conditions have prevailed in North Otago this week, and there was mticn activity on .the land in preparation for spring crops. The feed position is improving and with warmer conditions the grass is now coming away. Wheat Tlie Wheat Committee advises that as from Monday the new price, owing to the removal of the subsidy ou cornsacks, wifi be effective. There has been a better inquiry this week for seed for spring wheat sowing and it is anticipated that more spring wheat will oe •sown. Oats.—With the announcement of an increase of 3d a bushel in the ceiling price of white oats for next season, there has been a better inquiry for seed oats, which are on tlie short side. There are very few oats now offering on the market but there are still odd lines to be threshed. Barley.—lt is expected a fair area in barley wifi be sown, mostly on contract. The iftcrease in price for next season will probably have the effect of a big area being sown. Chaff.—There has been a strong inquiry from the North Island this week, and sales have been made on sample at the ceiling prices. Potatoes.—A further increment in the price of potatoes is announced this week under the price order, and as from August 29 the price for f.a.q. whites to growers is £9 10s 1’.0.b.5.i. and £8 10s for undergrade. This increment represents 15s a ton. Seeds.—The white clover market is very weak, and there is still no business passing. The Montgomery market is also weak and until exporters receive some orders, this will be difficult to sell. It is also difficult to find buyers' for cowgrass at even lower prices. There have been a few retail orders this week for sowing down. The principal sowing down in North Otago is with rape and a better inquiry should come later.
