BADMINTON

CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT PA. AUCKLAND, Sept. 5. Finalists were found in most sections of the New Zealand badminton championships to-night, and some exciting games were witnessed. R. Lewis (Auckland) and P. Hawksworth (Masterton) will play off in the final of the Men’s Singles, having won their semi-finals. There was little between Lewis and H. M. Purser (New Plymouth). In the first set Lewis proved more consistent and won 15 —if. Lewis proved the superior player and finally took the set and the match 15—11. Hawksworth had to fight hard for his win in the second set against P. Anderson (Auckland), but near the close Anderson fell away and gave Hawksworth the match 15—6, 18—13. Miss M. Kerr (Otago) was again in winning form, and she defeated Miss T. Greaves (Wanganui) 11—1. 11—3. Hawksworth and Pearce, the Doubles title holders, smashed their way to victory in the first set, .15—11, against R. Crooks and C. Crooks, but had a close tussle in the final set, which they won 15—12. Mrs Hawksworth and Miss Kerr took the first set of the Women’s Doubles with little trouble, but Mrs Wrathall and Miss Pollock fought gamely in the second set, and it was not until their opponents finally found form that they took the game 15—11.
