THE DISRUPTION

Sir,—ln some of the letters appearing m respect of the stand made by the disruption fathers of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland it seems necessary to bring the issue afresh before-your readers. The Government challenged the rule of the Presbyterian Church by presbyteries and by its General Assembly. The fathers of the disruption were in no way fanatics, but sober-minded men who saw clearly what the issue portended. Had the rule of the Church of England by bishops been challenged in the same way the same thing would have taken place. Remember the trial of the seven bishops. Englishmen are after all rather like Scotchmen —just as stubborn and almost if not quite as logical.—l am, etc., Gi R.
