THE VIRTUES OF YESTERYEAR

Sir,—Judging by the column Eighty-five Years Ago, there would appear to have been little of the plaster saint about quite a lot of our ancestors. Seventy to 80 of them seemed to have been in gaol every Friday. That is, I am sure, a good many more than would be in gaol in Dunedin to-day, notwithstanding the great increase in population. Here is a problem for the moralist. Energy, enterprise and initiative were greater in Otago when the percentage of people in gaol was much more than at any other time. It looks like an example of what Chesterton called the virile virtues of the pothouse.—l am, etc., M. August 30.
