NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OTAGO IN STRONG POSITION P.A. TIMARU, Sept. 4. The New Zealand table tennis championships began to-day with inteiprovincial matches which reached the concluding rounds. The championships attracted 111 entries—a record. In the opening rounds of the Men’s Singles there were few surprises. G. Corbett (Hutt Valley), seeded fourth in New Zealand, was beaten by N. Brightwell, an Otago unseeded player. In the Women’s Singles, V. Townsend, seeded second in New Zealand, was beaten by E. Walkinshaw, an Otago unseeded player. In the interproyincial matches the Otago men’s team appears to be the strongest contender for the Kean Challenge Shield. Otago, with three wins to its credit, has only Canterbury to play. Wellington is the present holder of the shield. In the women’s matches for the Teagle Memorial Shield, Wellington and Otago lead with three wins each. They meet to-morrow for the final.

Results.—Men’s matches: Otago beat Hutt Valley by 11 matches to 1; Wellington beat Canterbury B—4; South Canterbury beat Hutt Valley 10—2, Otago beat Wellington 7—5, Wellington beat Hutt Valley 10—2, South Canterbury beat Canterbury by 14 sets to 2 after drawing six matches all. Otago beat South Canterbury by 11 matches to 1. Canterbury drew with Hutt Valley, each wining six matches with games even. Women’s Matches. Wellington beat South Canterbury by 10 matches to 2, Otago beat Canterbury by 9 matches to 3, Otago beat Hutt Valley by 10 matches to 2, Wellington beat Canterbury by 11 matches to 1, South Canterbury beat Canterbury by 16 games to 14 after drawing 6 matches all, Wellington beat Hut; Valley by 11 matches to 1, Otago beat South Canterbury by 11 matches to 1, Hutt Valley beat Canterbury by 10 maiches to 2. Championship events are in progress.
