CARGO PILLAGING

THREE SEAMEN SENTENCED

TERM OF HARD LABOUR P.A. AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. "A very bad type of offence which is much prevalent in New Zealand and apparently in other parts of the Empire at the present time,” said Mr Justice Fair when sentencing three seamen from an overseas vessel for the theft of goods pillaged from the ship’s cargo to 12 months’ hard labour each. They were Frederick William Robert Chen-y, aged 21, John James Heptinstall, aged 28, and Peter Hiscock, aged 20. Tney engaged a taxi driver at midnight to drive them with parcels 6f rugs and dress material valued at about £SOO from the ship Akaroa into the city, but were taken by the taxi driver to the police station.
