CHANGES POSSIBLE IN USE OF TAIERI HANGARS
TT is understood that, in the near future, New ZeaA land National Airways will be shifted across Taieri airport into the more commodious hangar at present used for storage purposes by the R.N.Z.A.F. Although no confirmation beyond the fact that the matter “had been discussed” could be obtained locally, painters are already at work transforming the present austere semi-camouflage coating of the building. In view of the expansion of the air services, this would appear to be a logical move as, in addition to providing considerably more hangar space, it would bring the airways base alongside the airport control tower. An end view of the newly-painted section of the hangar is given above, and below is the present hangar, flanked by the club’s hangar and club rooms of the Otago Aero Club.
In the event of a move, Aero Club members have expressed a hope that the present National Airways hangar will become available to the club. At present, club hangar space is over-taxed and at least one club aircraft must be left outside in all weathers. In addition, the social side of the Aero Club’s activities has grown and the small club room could be enlarged to take in a section of the present hangar if the latter became surplus to the needs of the club. In view of the great increase in interest in civilian flying, and the numbers of visitors who call at the airfield during the week-ends, it has been suggested that the glassing in of the portion of the present hangar next to the club room and the provision of light refreshments would be a popular innovation which would be of considerable benefit to the club. Any such plans, however, hinge on the availability to the Aero Club of the present National Airways building.
