STRIKE CALLED

FORTY-HOUR WEEK DEMANDED FEDERAL TRADE UNIONISTS’ ACTION Rec. 1 a.m. MELBOURNE. Sept. 2. A one-day strike will take place throughout Australia on October 20, and trade unionists will work only 40 hours weekly thereafter unless in the meantime the Arbitration Court has announced a general 40-hour week. This decision was contained in a resolution unanimously adopted to-day by the congress of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions. Delegates recorded dissatisfaction with unnecessarily prolonged procedure followed by the court in the 40hour week case. The congress decided to give full support to any union, the members of which refused to work more than 40 hours weekly without loss of pay. The resolution accepted by the congress represented the composite motions of two powerful unions and several amendments.
