The pamphlet claims that over 8,000,000,000 cigarettes were smoked monthly during the whole of 1946, and points out that totalisator receipts during the same year reached £ 14,500,000, while bets lodged with bookmakers are estimated at between £290.000.000 and £460.000,000. About £200.000,000 was wagered during the same period at dog racing tracks, and the annual turnover of football pools was £50,000,000. The pamphlet estimates the number of people employed in various sections of the entertainment industry has increased by 160 per cent, since 1921.
