CARGO PILLAGING

t SOURCE OF SUPPLY CRITICISED

The chairman of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce, Mr W. R. Williams, when discussing the question of cargo pillaging at the monthly meeting on Monday night, said that from his own experience he found that a great percentage of the pillaging was carried out at the source of supply, before the packages reached the vessels concerned. Seamen and wharf labourers received most of the blame, Mr Williams said, but a very great percentage of the blame could be attached to the source of supply. On Mr Jeffery’s suggestion, the chairman was asked to prepare a report for submission to the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
