OAMARU’S BID FOR TRADE The Oamaru Harbour Board yesterday received from the Harbours’ Association a copy of the minptes of the national conference convened by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, on the question of aid to Britain. There was-a long discussion on the question of expediting the turn-round of overseas shipping, which was one of the subjects brought before the conference, mepibers of the board pointing out that the loading of frozen mutton into overseas ships at Oamaru would avoid the bottle-neck at the main ports, and expedite the turnround of ships, and further that there was waterside labour at Oamaru to load these ships expeditiously. It was considered that the sending of overseas ships to Oamaru would assist in getting food quickly to England. The board unanimously passed a resolution authorising the chairman, secretary harbour master, and ‘Mr D. Williams to collaborate arid write to the Overseas Shipping Allotment Committee and the Minister of Supply, Mr Nordmeyer, pointing out the benefits to be derived through loading overseas ships with food at Oamaru. The board also decided that a conlerence of interested bodies be convened at An early date in connection with. the leading and discharge of cargo at Oamaru The action of the secretary and harbour master in writing to the master ol the Wellpark in connection with the discharge of Australian wheat at Oamaru, was approved.
