HARBOUR BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING Mr W. M. Cooper was in the chair at. the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Harbour Board yesterday. The Waitaki High School Board advised that 239 students attended the Oamaru Technical School.—lt was agreed to make the usual grant of £5 to the Technical School. The board decided that the buildings owned by Mr Nicholson on the lighthouse reserve should be removed or rent paid, the matter being referred to the Standing Committee, with power to act. The North Otago A. and P. Association was granted the usual remission of harbour rates on the Show Grounds. The Yacht and Power Boat Club was granted the use of certain timber from the housing of the old crane for repairs to the jetty. The chairman reported that the Standing Committee had met representatives of the watersiders and conferred on the question of provision of adequate accommodation on Holmes wharf. Generally, he said, the committee agreed' with the watersiders’ proposals, and they hoped the cost would be the responsibility of the Waterfront Industry Commission.—, The board agreed to authorise the Watersiders’ Union to have plans and estimates prepared by the architect and placed before the next meeting of the board. Captain C. A. Barker reported that six coastal ships, totalling 5036 tons, worked the port during August, compared with five coastal ships of 4537 tons last year. The inward cargo was 535 tons and the outward 3343 tons, a total of 3878 tons.
