DISMISSALS FOR “PERSISTENT ABSENTEEISM”

LONDON, Aug. 25. Dismissal notices for “ persistent absenteeism ” —the first issued since coal mines were nationalised—have been served on four miners at Houghton colliery, Durham They will leave at the end of the fortnight. The decision to dismiss the men was taken on the recommendation of the local' Joint Consultative Committee, representing the management and the men, and was endorsed by the Houghton Miners’ Lodge.
