HOLIDAY TRAVEL

SOUTH ISLAND POPULAR APPEAL OF OTAGO’S CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Aug. 26. A pronounced feature of summer holiday travel bookings this year is the desire of North Islanders to travel to the South Island resorts. The manager of the central Government Tourist Bureau in Wellington, Mr A. G Christie, said to-day that North Islanders would be flocking to the south from Christmas onwards. Queenstown and the Hermitage, Mount Cook, were the chief attractions among the scenic resorts in the south this year, Mr Christie said, and there was an additional attraction in the centenary celebrations at Dunedin. It appeared that the. accommodation position for latecomers would be hopeless in Dunedin from January until the end of March. Mr Christie said that holiday book- • ings generally were so heavy this year that some holiday resorts had been booked out since last May for next Christmas. At this stage it seemed that only cancellations would offer latecomers any opportunity securing bookings. The Tourist Department will begin its conducted tours from main centres in October. These tours will not be held during the Christmas-New Year rush period.
