VISITORS TO BELGIUM BRISK TRADE IN CARPETS, v N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent. Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 20. A profitable trade in carpets, which has enabled many British holidaymakers in Belgium to pay for their holidays out of their profits, has grown up as the resdlt of the carpet shortage in Britain and the high prices paid for Turkish carpets which can be bought cheaply in Belgium. British people on holiday are buying carpets for the equivalent of £6 in francs and even after paying duty and purchase tax, are making IQO per cent, or more on the resale of the carpets ip Britain. The trade has grown to such proportions that the Ostend to Dover ferry steamer is now. known as the carpet ship.
