CHAIN OF EXPLOSIONS
Rec. 11.30 p.m. MADRID, Aug. 20. . Rescue squads worked all night in the glare of floodlights to reach the scores of people who are still believed to be trapped as the result of the Cadiz explosion. There is still no indication of what caused the first blast, which, in addition to exploding about 140 torpedoes, set off a chain of explosions among 1000 mines. A Spanish correspondent in Cadiz at the time of the explosion said; “Ail round me buildings seemed to have been wrecked. In a few agonising moments the happy city was converted into a place of terror. The sky was coloured red, blasts rolled like artillery, great buildings trembled, and wildly-running people, some screaming in hysteria, suddenly filled the streets. I went towards the San Severiano nuarter. A girl was pulling a lea pro truding from the wreck of a house. She called: ‘lt’s my father Help me’ Screams came from a burning house and the smell of searing flesh.”
