DESERTION CHARGE
TWO BRITISH SEAMEN POLICE COURT HEARING Two seamen who were charged with deserting the British ' ship Saminver at Dunedin on Julv 11 told the magistrate, Mr H. W. Bundle, in the City Police Court yesterday that they thought they would like New Zealand better than England. They were John Olsen and Roy Thomas, both aged 18 years. Both pleaded guilty to the charge. Mr J. C. Robertson, who prosecuted on behalf of the agents for the ship, H. L. Tapley and Co., Ltd., said that both men had been working on a trawler, but had now obtained work in the city. The magistrate said that he had some hesitation in sending such young men to prison. He remanded them in custody until Monday. Remanded to Christchurch John Albert Arthur, a carpenter, aged 27, of Christchurch, was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Albert Victor Canfield in Madras street, Christchurch, on August 14, and stealing cigarettes, tobacco, and money to the value of £25 and a cheque for £l6 12s 6d. The chief detective, Mr T. Y. Hall, said that the accused had been arrested on his arrival from the north on Tuesday. He asked that the accused should be, remanded to appear in Christchurch on August 25, and the request was granted by the magistrate. Remanded in Custody Edward Benjamin McLeod, aged 32, a married man with one child, residing at Burnside, pleaded guilty to a charge of wilful exposure. He was remanded in custody until Monday. The chief detective said that on August 11 the defendant picked up a girl aged six years, and her sister, aged five years, and too-k them from Burnside to the Kaikorai Valley in his truck. He had committed the offence, which he had frankly admitted to the police, while the truck was in Kaikorai Valley. Mr J. G. Warrington said on behalf of the defendant that he could not make any explanation of the occurrence. He was a first offender in every way. and counsel requested that the benefits of probation should be extended to him. Remanding the defendant, the magistrate siad that children must be protected. Sixty-sixth Conviction Sarah Elizabeth Smith, a domestic, aged 48 years, residing at Brighton, pleaded guilty for the sixiy-sixth time to a charge of drunkenness. She was fined £l, in default 43 hours’ imprisonment. Cldinney Fires For allowing chimneys to catch fire. Alexander Edwsrd Speight McGrath and Ann Anderson O'Shea were each fined 10s and costs (lOsl. Norman Allen Trocn and Douglas William Wright were fined 10s, and Delia Martin was convicted for the same offence. Parking Offences For parking in a prohibited area, the following were fined 10s and costs (10s): Albert Aitken William Bicknell, Herbert Joseph Chapman, Fergus Flockhart Dunn, Doris Hall, Robert Hogan, John Alexander Horn, Frederick Howard Jackson, Vernon Henry Jones. Malcolm Ravenswood Morris, Frank McCrorie, Albert Edward XvfcDougsll. Richard Burns Nicholson, Athol Gordon Wise, George Baden PowellWilson, and Thomas Christopher Wynne. Hillsdon Adams Hutton and Graham Leslie Scott were fined £1 and costs (10s) for the same offence, Ken Soo w:s fined 18s and costs (12s). and Birnie Ronald Trainor was fined 15s and costs (12s). Jsmes Darrag'n and David Stanley Muirhead were each fined 5s and cos's (10s) for the same offence, and James Henry Dawson and Donald Sidney Gray were ordered to pay court costs (10s). Other Traffic Offences lan Robert Phqjoung was fined £2 and costs (11s) for exceeding the speed limit. Similarly charged, Charles Edward Armishaw was fined the same amount, with costs (10s), and Walter Syme Eudey was fined £1 and costs (10s). For parking in front of a place of entertainment, Robert Thomas Bremnei, Noreen Esther Burrowes. and Barbrra Stevenson were each fined 10s and costs (10s). Trevor Crawford was fined 10s and costs (10s) for riding an unlighted bicycle. James Arthur Everett Fisher was fined £2 10s for failing to give way to traffic on the right, and his licence was ordered to be endorsed. Andrew Wilson, who pleaded not guilty to the s: me offence, was convicted, with cos's (£6 fis 8d). For parking over fire plugs, Drummond Anderson, John Honeymnn Elliott, Richard Berry Hamel, and Alexander Thomas Woodrow were each fined 10s and costs (10s). For having no warrant of fitness for vehicles, George Lyon Francis Baker, Kholda •* Wilfred Freeman, and Harold John Tyrie were each convicted and ordered to pay costs (10s). For parking on the wrong side of the road, John Callum Stevenson, Redmond Moreau Carrol, and Stuart Alexander Stevenson were each fined 5s and costs (10s), and David Renstead Smith was convicted without penalty. Hilary John Francis Shepherd was fined 5s and costs (10s) for being an unlicensed motor driver. For using unlicensed motor vehicles, Reginald Jack Eckhold, Jack La Hood, Hector McLeod Roulston, and Alan Wardale were each fined £1 and costs (10s). Daniel Farry, and Alexander Remfrey Harris were each fined £1 and costs for parking over vehicular entrances. Vernon William Moyle Voller was fined 10s and costs (10s) for parking over the time limit. Alfred James Mills, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted on a charge of driving without due care and attention, and was fined £1 and costs (10s).
