FIFTH CRICKET TEST
ENGLAND’S GOOD LEAD DIFFICULT TASK FOR SOUTH AFRICANS LONDON, Aug. 19. England has set South Africa 450 yans to get in the second innings to win the fifth test match. Leading by 125 runs on the first innings. England declared her second innings closed at six for 325. The wicket was powdery when South Africa resumed its first innings to-day. Much depended upon Mitchell and Dawson remaining together, following the failure of the South Africans' tail in the fourth test. Mitchell continued an unhurried innings to reach his first century m the present test series in 285 minues. Dawson batted merrily until he misjudged one of Wright’s googlies, and was out legbefore. After Mitchell's dismissal Mann was the only South African to make a show against the English howling, the last six wickets adding only 98. Copson finished the innings by taking three wickets in.seven balls. England, in its second innings, adopted forcing tactics, and it was obvious that Yardley had instructed his men to score fast. This brought excellent results. The score went quickly to three for 158 before Yardley and Cranston were dismissed. Compton, batting in dashing fashion, reached 1000 runs of! the South African bowling this season when his total was 57. . Compton, when 113, played too early to a good ball from Rowan, and Nourse, running in from long-on, took a fine catch. Compton’s innings lasted 115 minutes, and included 15 boundaries. South Africa went in to bat for tne second time with 30 minutes to play They lost Dyer, and at stumps, with nine wickets intact, they required to score 443 to-morrow to win. This is regarded as a terrific task on a dusty pitch favouring the bowlers. „ „ The scores are as follows.— ENGLAND Second Innings Hutton, c Tuckett, b Mann .. .. .. 38 Washbrook, c Fullerton, b Rowan .. 43 Robertson, b Rowan Compton, c Nourse, b Dawson .. •• 113 Yardley. c sub., b Mann Cranston, b Rowan.
