FAT HOGGETS FIRMER STEERS AND HEIFERS CHEAPER P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. ID. The store sheep entry at Addington today was 367, including 300 hoggets. The demand for all classes continued to be good and prices were up to recent sales. The quality was fairly good. Most of the hoggets offering comprised wethers and mixed lines, but one excellent line of 80 Romney ewe hoggets sold at 41s. The best of the wether hoggets sold at 34s 6d and good lots made from 24s 3d to 28s 2d. Among tire ewes offered was a good line of 51 Corriedales, with fair mouths, running with 52 Down cross lambs. The line made 255, all counted. Good line hill halfbreds, with sound mouths, made 28s, the top price in thevsection A pen of wethers made 21s 6d The fat hogget offering was 785. The quality was mixed and the demand for best was keen at values Is better. Best lighter sorts showed little change. Values: Extra prime hoggets made from 50s to 61s 7d; prime, 44s to 48s; good, 36s to 435: medium 30s to 34s 6d; light, 25s 6d to 29s 6d. The fat sheep offering totalled 5000. The quality was high and after a firm opening the sale hardened gradually. Prime medium-weight wethers recovered frofri a drop of Is and with other classes 6howed an overall improvement of 2s. Odd lines of short wethers sold well. Values: Extra prime heavy wethers made from 54s to 70s Id; prime heavy, 49s to 635; prime medium-weight, 40s to 475; ordinary and light, 30s to 38s. Prime heavy ewes made from 47s to 52s Id; prime medium-weight, 40s to 465; ordinary, 34s to 395; light and unfinished, 22s to 335. The fat cattle yarding was 611, chiefly from local sources. Odd lines were forward from Blenheim and the West Coast The quality was fair as an excellent showing of steers was offset by a large number of old and plain cows. At the start, values were £2 below last week for steers, but prices firmed steadily until at the end there was little difference from last week. Steers and heifers were about £1 cheaper, but good cows remained firm. Best beef made to 67s 6d for 1001 b with some sales at 70s, good made from 55s to 62s 6d, and medium, from 40s to 50s. Best cow beef made to 45s and secondary to 365. Values: Extra crime heavy steers made to £3l 17s 6d; crime heavy, £22 10s to £25 10s; prime medium-weight, £lB to £22; ordinary and light, £ls to £l7 Extra prune heifers made to £27 2s 6d; prime, £ls to £lB 10s; ordinary and light, £lO to £l4.
