CHATHAM CUP Mosgiel’s spoiling tactics against Technical (Christchurch), which fielded a much better balanced side, almost gained the decision in a hard-fought game in the South Island Chatham Cup final. Technical, playing the third back game as used by the Springboks and exploiting it well, had the Mosgiel forwards in trouble from the outset by running them offside. When Mosgiel obtained the measure of their opponents’ defensive tactics, the long-range kicking of the Mosgiel halves forced the visitors into mistakes and goals resulted. To beat the thirdback method, half-backs, and also fullbacks who play wide, must play the ball forward before parting, preferably to the wings, to keep the play open and to allow plenty of scoring room in the inside positions. In Bailey, the visitors possessed an excellent type of centre. The way he distributed the ball was perfect and very unselfish. He also varied his play to go through himself to score. The final of the Chatham Cup between Watersiders (Wellington) and Technical (Christchurch) should provide a good game, and will be followed with much interest locally.
