DRINKING AT CARISBROOK
Sir,—As one of those who also suffered last Saturday from the inane bellowings and interferences of drunken men and women at Carisbrook, I sympathise with your correspondent on Saturday morning. I believe the Rugby Union is trying to remedy matters, and I believe that if the police had the power to do so they would rapidly check the abuses we see at every match from the so-called sports. For your correspondent to hope that legislation will be introduced on the same lines as that dealing with drinking at dances is to wish for fhe moon! The recent legislation introduced to the House in connection with the establishment of the Licensing Trust at Masterton gives the trust power to sell liquor either itself or through its own agents at any fair, show, races or other place of public amusement. As no Licensing Committee is established’!!! Masterton, the trust itself has sole discretionary power to give this permission It does not look as though the relief that every decent person hopes for will be granted for many years to come!—l am, etc., August 18.
