RUGBY INTERESTS

NORTH OTAGO UNION Mr W. Berry (president) was in the chair at the weekly meeting of* the North Otago Rugby Union on Monday night. There were also present Messrs A. W. Marshall, H. Cross, A. R. Low, J. Benson, D. S. Loder, D. J. G. Lawrie, W. L. and R. L. Brown and J. Macmillan. The North Otago Sports Bodies’ Association advised that the Harlequins were willing to plav North Otago at Oamaru on August 30 to assist the association campaign to raise funds. —It was agreed to accept the offer and co-operate with the association in a sports day, and also to play the Clark Shield match between Duntroon and Athletic, at Duntroon. It was reported that a representative hockey match was being arranged against South' Canterbury as a curtain-raiser to the Rugby match. . It was agreed to hold the pennant matches for the town teams, the final of the Ralph Cup (juniors) between Enfield and Old Boys, and to hold the Cecil Davey Memorial Cup field day on August 23. Unfair Criticism Alleged Mr D. S. Loder, selector and coach of the North Otago representative team, drew attention to an article which appeared in last Saturday’s Star Sports, Dunedin, which he contended was an unfair criticism of the coach and the coaching of the team. Members of the union who supported Mr Loder, expressed the opinion that North Otago had not had a better team for 20 years than this year s team, and that the article was an unwairanted attack on Mr Loder as a coach. Messrs A. R. Low and A. W. Mai shall moved that the union had every confidence in Mr Loder as a selector and a coach. Mr Loder said he did not ask for such a motion, but it was carried unanimously.
