Ministerial The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, was engaged in departmental business in Dunedin yesterday morning and left on his return to Wellington by special aircraft yesterday afternoon, connecting with the steamer express at Lyttelton. Dr A. D. Trendall, professor of Greek at Sydney University, and Professor R. E. Smith,' professor of Latin at the same university, will arrive in Dunedin by air this afternoon. They will stay al Sehvyn College as the guests of Archdeacon Whitehead until August 29. 1 Reference to the death of Mr Hugh Smeaton was made at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugbv Football Union last night. Mr Smeaton had had a long connection witn the Referees’ Association, being a founder and life member of that body. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. Sergeant A. McCarthy, who has been the officer in charge of the North Dunedin Police Station since 1938, retired recently on superannuation and intends taking up residence in-Dunedin. Joining the police force at Wellington in 1908, -he was subsequently stationed at Auckland and Devonport until 1919, when he was transferred to take charge of the Takapuna station. In January, 1924, 'he was promoted -to the rank of sergeant and transferred to Dunedin where he was attached to the central station until 1934, when he was transferred to take charge of the New Brighton station. Sergeant McCarthy returned to Dunedin in 1938 and had been in charge of the North Dunedin station ever since. He is a keen bowler and as a member of the Leith Club won the pail's championship last year. Passengers who left by air for the north:—Miss B. Howell, Mr A. Howell, Mrs C. Howell, Mrs D. Those who arrived from the north were:—Mr F. Burt, Mrs I. Hallamore, Mr and Mrs J. S. Brown, Mr J. A Brown, Mrs L. Cashin, Lady Hunter, Mr W. Scotland, Mr A. W. Judd, Mr and Mrs Conyngham. Mr J. Thompson, Mr J McEwen, Miss N. Caughey,. Mrs G. COoper. Passengers who left for the south were:—Mr J. W. Davidson, Mr A. H. Davidson, Mrs T. F. Stark, Miss J. Stark, Miss S. Traill, Mrs D. Millar, Mr E. R. Hunter, Miss M. Sharp, Mr A A. Heydon.
