August 23 .. .. Egmont-Wanganui H.C. August 30 .. ~ Foxton R.C. August 30 .. .. Taranaki H.C. Jottings The three-year-old sister to Eriskay will race under the name of Jan. Lord Dundonald, the winner of the Duke of Gloucester Cup, is enjoying a let-up. Dileas, who was recently purchased by Mr J. P. O’Brien, is now located at Wingatui. New .Season The new local season will be opened on September 6, when the Otago Hunt Club will race at Wingatui. Nominations are due to-day. Promising Form Although Lady Melrose did not win at Riccarton, she showed form which suggested that a win will come her way before the season is very much older. Sound Race Alamode ran a sound race to finish fourtlj in the Heathcote Handicap. The Salmagundi gelding will only need to hold that form to win at .one of the early meetings on the southern circuit. Veteran Horseman J. Anderson, an English horseman who recently renewed his licence to ride, is 57 years of age, and he rode a winner at Carlisle last month. He had been retired for 25 years. Likes Shorter Journey Our Maureen did not appreciate the long straight at Riccarton, but the first time she is started in a race of six furlongs she will in all probability be elevated to the position of favourite. Winner by Coronach , Keening, a winner at the Combined Huht meeting on Saturday, is a four-year-old by Coronach from Jolly, by Arausia from Marion’s Birthday, by Psychology from d’Oro, by All Black from Rurarius, by Wnltster from Aurous. by Wallace. Change of Form Wane raced like two different horses at the Grand National meeting. On the first day the Defaulter gelding was made

third favourite, but ran a most disappointing race and was never near' the leaders. On Saturday he was always travelling like a winner, and it was not surprising that he was allowed to pay a long price. Surprise Winner Kirkella, a surprise winner at Riccarton on Saturday, is one of H. Nurse’s team and is a five-year-old gelding by Solicitor General from Sweet Beauty, thus a brother to Lord Advocate. Sweet Beauty was also the dam of Cottingham, Rebel Star. Palmyra and Treasurer. Prize Ring’s Win The manner in which Prize Ring won the Sydenham Hurdles was very impressive. Carrying top weight and conceding from 121 b to 351 b to his opponents, he just outclassed them, the race being all over when he took the lead, nearly half a mile from home. He is the Dominion’s star hurdler, and the only regret is that he and Boolamskee did not clash during the recent Grand National meeting Southland Sires Among the sires located in Southland are Royal Sovereign and Alcanzar, who are standing in the Balfour district. Royal Sovereign is by Paper Money, the leading brood mare sire, from Royal Flower, who was got by Kilbroney, the sire of winners of £278,026. Alcanzar is by Balboa, who sired many high-class winners, from Kokowai, who was got by All Red, a dual Auckland Cup winner. One of Alcanzar’s first representatives on the turf is Wee Mac. a recent winner. Sphere’s Form A hurdle race for Sphere should come before the spring circuit is far advanced. He ran a good race in the Grand National Hurdles, and, though he had no chance with Boolamskee, he looked like taking second place when he fell at the last hurdle. Last Saturday he repeated his good form in the Sydenham Hurdles. Prize Ring was too good for him, but he beat the others in a style which augurs well for his future. Sphere is in the stable of the Washdyke trainer, F. Trilford, a highly capable man with jumpers, and this one may go on to good class.
