President Truman Defends Atomic Bombing of Japan
Rec. 9.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 14. President Truman, on the second anniversary of the defeat of Japan, answered Critics who had declared that the use of atomic bombs against Japan was unnecessary. He said to-day ,that while a school boy's hindsight on strategic problems might sometimes seem wiser than a general's foresight at the time, he still believed his decision to use atomic bombs was essential to save the lives of a quarter of a million American boys. The President regretted that the hopes he had expressed two years ago for early, satisfactory peace settlements had not been realised, but when asked who was to blame for the failure he declined to comment. *
