Talks at Higher Level Predicted
Rec. 11 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 13. The Secretary of the Treasury, Mr John Snyder, announced to-day that he would lead the American delegation in the Anglo-American economic discussions beginning in Washington on Monday Mr Snyder said the negotiations would be conducted by the National- Advisory Council, which is the top-ranking Government policymaking body in the field of foreign finance, of which Mr Snyder himself is chairman. It also includes the secretary of commerce, Mr W. A. Harriman, a representative of the State Department, and the Federal Reserve Bank chairman, Mr William McChesney Martin. Mr Snyder emphasised that the talks would he concerned with problems' arising from the AngloAmerican financial agreement and
nothing else. He envisaged, however, a broad discussion which might lead to even higher level talks. He said: “We want to find out what the British have in mind.” Mr Snyder confirmed that American film industry representatives had questioned the Treasury as to whether Britain’s new film tax contravenes the loan agreement terms or the double taxation pact or the reciprocal trade agreement. He said this aspect would be discussed with Sir Wilfred Eady’s delegation next week. He said there was a feeling in Washington that next week’s conference would be largely of an exploratory nature, leaving the way open for a conference to be conducted at Cabinet level by both sides.
