MANY ARRESTS

ARSON AND LOOTING ANTI-JEWISH VIOLENCE OUTBREAK IN ENGLAND Kec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 5. The anti-Jewish demonstrations at Liverpool were still continuing at midnight last night,'when 35 arrests had been made, including a number of women. A Jewishowned cabinet works was set on fire for the second time in four nights. More demonstrations also occurred yesterday in Salford, London, Manchester, Newcastle, and Gateshead. Eighteen demonstrators were arrested at Manchester. A crowd of several hundred people in Liverpool tried to loot a number of damaged shops, but policemen broke up the mob. A small crowd man-handled the son of a Jewish shopkeeper as he was attempting to board up his father’s damaged premises. '

The Chief Constable of Liverpool, in an official statement on the demonstrations last night, says: “There were 69 incidents, chiefly window breaking. The premises attacked were mainly shops. There were several instances of looting.” Scotland Yard regards the weekend anti-Jewish disturbances in Britain as the outcome of the shock at the Palestine Jews’ hanging of the two British sergeants. Five people were remanded at Salford on charges, of disorderly behavious. Two men were fined at Manchester for damaging shop windows, and another for shouting: “ Now is the time to strike. Down with the Jews.” The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Alderman Gregson, appealed to citizens to help the police to prevent attacks on shops and property, “ supposedly owned by Jews.” He said this form of demonstration was ineffective, unfair, and un-English. Much property of non-Jews, as well as of Jews, was being damaged. “ Looting was also raising its ugly head,” he added.
