MISCHIEF CAMPAIGN

SECTION OF EGYPTIAN PRESS A,. SHIFT TO STIMULATE ANGLOPHOBIA Kec. 10.30 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 5. The Cairo correspondent of The •Times says that on the eve of presentation of the Egyptian case to the Security Council,* the general impression in Cairo is one of public apathy. This does not mean that there is little interest in the outcome of the case; on the contrary, it is partly because this is Ramadan, the month when Moslems must fast by day, and partly because the irresponsible section of the local press has overdone its efforts to stimulate or scare the public into Anglophobia. Day in and day out there have been the usual meaningless references to Imperialism; oppression and exploitation have been, described as the chief British contributions to Egypt. Britain is also accused of carrying on a nerve war against Egypt, and any suggestion that the Egyptian case, is not completely justified is branded as imperialistic propaganda. t One newspaper has gone so far as to suggest that the Egyptian * Army should train commandos to kidnap British Individuals, flog them in public, and blow up their homes. The tone of the responsible press is as moderate as ever, but it will be a hapoy day for Anglo-Egyptian relations if and when a satisfactory solution by the United Nations of the dispute between Britain and Egypt removes what is now the local mischiefmakers’ chief source of material.
