SIMPLE CEREMONY
WEDDING OF PRINCESS LABOUR NEWSPAPER’S RECOMMENDATION Rec. 9.30 p.m. LONDON. Aug. 5. “In ordinary times, Princess Elizabeth’s wedding to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten would be a spectacular event, attracting a vast number of provincial citizens to London, but the nation is engaged to-day in a grim struggle for economic recovery, in which every day’s output is valuable, and no doubt the King’s advisers will take present abnormal circumstances into account when the detailed programme for the wedding is drawn up." says the Daily Herald in a leader. “It has been unofficially suggested that the wedding day will be declared a public holiday,” the paper adds, “ but we do not think such a decision, if made, would be applauded by the mass of the people. Any use of labour to erect stands along a processional route would certainly be widely criticised. In our view, public opinion, while sincerely wishing happiness to the young couple, would prefer that the wedding be conducted as simply as possible and with a minimum of. dislocation of the nation s work. •
