GRAND NATIONAL WINNER

Lopsided Pedigree and Tubed

DIFFICULTIES SURMOUNTED Surpeen, the winner of the Grand National Steeples, is a halfbrother of Valpeen, who made history by winning the Grand National twice and the Great Northern twice. Their dam, the breeding of whom is not known, was exchanged for a hack worth £l. Surpeen is used for riding around sheep, and after he had won on Saturday his owner stated that a race meeting is just an occasional outing for him. Surpeen is broken-winded and in March of last year he was operated on, an aluminium tube about an inch in diameter being inserted in his throat, with a fine metal gauze over the mouth of the tube. That the operation was a success is proved by the fact that he has been placed in his nine races since then. After a race the gauze filter is removed, and replaced with a plug of cotton wool, and the horse reverts to the normal manner of breathing.

Surpeen will go down in the records as a winner who surmounted two handicaps—a lopsided pedigree and a tubed throat.
