MORE PRODUCTION

AUSTRALIA’S URGENT NEED CONFERENCE AT CANBERRA Rec. 7 p.m. CANBERRA, Aug. 2. Seventeen men who represent manufacturers and unions in all States, flew to Canberra yesterday to try to frame methods to increase production by ensuring peace in industry. They will meet the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, the Minister for Labour and National Service, Mr E. J. Holloway, and the Minister for Health, and the Acting Attorney-general, Senator N. E. McKenna, in a series of conferences to-day and to-morrow, behind closed doors. The delegates believe there will he a “ lot of hard hitting and straight talk” at the conferences. Mr Chifley is expected to insist that industry must increase production to maintain Australia’s living standards. He will probably tell delegates some of the details of the economic crisis in Britain. The Government contends that Australia must increase production, particularly of capital goods, to enable public bodies and industry generally to carry out post-war reconstruction programmes more speedily. Mr Chifley is expected to emphasise that for some time Australia cannot depend greatly on overseas supplies of capital goods. This is because the British Government is now considering reducing some of these exports to Australia to enable Britain to send more goods to dollar countries.
