BRITISH TOBACCO TAX
AN UNDERSTANDING REACTION Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON. June 10. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Hugh Dalton, speaking in the House of Commons, said that he had been astonished at how easily people had taken the tobacco tax and how flat any opposition had fallen. “ Most people understand we need dollars for food more than for smokes. The people have responded in terms of consumption,” he said. “Although he appealed for 25 per cent, cut in purchases for the first week or two, after the Budget it fell almost 50 per cent. There had been a slight increase since, but consumption was still comfortably below 75 per cent. Mr Dalton said that he would introduce regulations exempting old age pensioners from certain increased tobacco duties.
