WINTER SPORTS CENTRE

QUEENSTOWN’S POSSIBILITIES AMERICAN EXPERT’S OPINION The possibilities of Queenstown as a winter sports centre were referred to by Mr Olaf Rodegard, a Norwegianborn ski instructor, of Oregon, United States of America, when he met officials of the Otago Ski Club at a function recently. Mr Rodegard, who is under contract to the Mount Cook-Southern Lakes Tourist Company for this season at Coronet Peak, expressed the opinion that Queenstown had great natural beauty, and with' development it had possibilities of ranking favourably with European alpine resorts. If this were accomplished, he added, many Americans would be attracted there when normal travelling facilities were re-established. The popularity of winter sports in America was mentioned by Mr Rode-: gard, who said that its growth m colleges and univefsities had been rapid) On Mount Hood, some 50 miles from Portland, Oregon, the number of skiers at a week-end would be well over 4000.
