RUMOUR SNOWBALLS
GALE BECOMES CYCLONE BUSH TELEGRAPH IN DUNEDIN Rumour ran riot in Dunedin yesterday afternoon, and a report received in the city that a gale was expected during the early hours of this morning had been embellished by nightfall until the wind had assumed cyclone proportions and was definitely set to sweep down on Dunedin at 2 inquiries by the Daily Times finally set the source of the report as being in the City Corporation Chambers, and it is definite that one department had been given warning of a probable gale. Another was advised that its members might be required to stand by should a gale and possible snow occur, and then the “ snowball ” grew. The weather forecast for to-day predicts that last night’s moderate northeasterly will turn to the south or south-west, becoming strong in exposed coastal positions. Widespread rain is expected south of Timaru, temperatures should become colder, and there is the possibility of snow in the back country and hail elsewhere. Meteorological officials explained carefully to the Daily Times that the term “cyclone” does not necessarily mean what the average citizen may be led to expect, but in meteorological parlance is merely a deep depression.
