BRIEF BIOGRAPHIES
DR JOHN MALCOLM, C.M.G. Professor John Malcolm, who has been awarded the C.M.G., came to Dunedin from Edinburgh in 1905. He was the first holder of the chair of physiology at the University of Otago as a separate lectureship, as up to that date it had been held jointly with the chair of anatomy. Professor Malcolm retired from the, lectureship early in 1944, after having built up considerable interest in the school and having conducted extensive 'researches into nutrition. Since his retirement he has been the chairman of the Nutrition Research Committee of the Medical Research Council. MR J. J. MARLOW, 0.8. E. Mr James John Marlow, 0.8. E., has been prominent in local body affairs in Dunedin since before the turn of the century, as well as having been in business in Dunedin as a furniture manufacturer for a long period. He was Mayor of St. Kilda from 1904 to 1906, and again from 1937 to 1938, after having been a member of the
then South Dunedin Borough Council from 1896 to 1901. He was a member of the Dunedin City Council for many years from 1909, and was deputy chairman of the Dunedin Drainage Board for 16 years. Mr Marlow has had a long association with the King Edward Technical College as a member and chairman of the Board of Governors. He was decorated by Pope Pius XI with the Leo Cross. MR J. F. HIMBURG, M.B.L. Mr J. F. Himburg, who has been awarded the M.8.E., has been prominent in musical circles and in concert party work in Dunedin for many years. His efforts in benevolent and charity causes have taken him all over Otago, and he has been a member of almost every musical in the city.
Mr Himburg began his concert party work in the First World War to raise funds for various worthy purposes, and in the recent war he was one of the first to organise a party for similar work and to visit camps around Dunedin to entertain troops. He has been a prominent member of the Community Sing Committee in Dunedin for 16 years, and was one of the original members of the Dunedin Philharmonic Society. He was born in Dunedin. CAPTAIN W. H. CUMMINGS, M.B.E. Captain W. H. Cummings, who has been awarded the M.8.E., saw service in the Pacific during the past war, and was a member of the advance party which went from New Zealand to Japan to prepare the ground for the arrival of the original J Force from Italy.
