Former Suffragette Secures Last Word

Rec. 11.30 pm. LONDON, May 29. A white-haired 75-year-old widow, Mrs E. M. White, a former Suffragette, ■ who in private eschews cigarettes in favour of a pipe, roused the Labour Party conference to a high pitch of enthusiasm with an eloquent demand for equal pay for the sexes. She introduced Suffragette tactics, defied the chairman, and ignored all the rules limiting speaking time. She had the last word and won the day with nearly a four to one vote in spite of a strong plea from the platform for the conference to reject the resolution. The Daily Express says that Cabinet is unlikely to change its view that it is inexpedient to grant equal pay now.
