LICENSING POLL

TRUST CONTROL ISSUE REJECTED BY RURAL AREAS MASTERTON’S AFFIRMATIVE VOTE P.A. WELLINGTON, May 28. Trust control scored in the southern area, including Masterton borough, of the former Masterton no-licence district in the poll held to-day, but failed in the other two areas—Akitio and Eketahuna—which are predominantly rural. The voting was:— Masterton Division For Trust 3385 Against 3651 Majority for Trust. 734. Akitio Division For Trust 86 Against 201 Majority against Trust, 115. Eketaliuna Division For Trust 401 Against 617 Majority against Trust, 216. There are still 248 postal votes to be taken into account over the three areas, but they cannot affect the result. It will be recalled that in a leaflet issued recently by the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason, it was stated that the poll was from guidance of Parliament. “If in any area, the proposal for Trust Control is desired by the electors, then legislation to be submitted to Parliament this coming session will provide that all licences in that area will be issued to a local trust. In respect of any area which does not desire Trust Control, legisation will provide for the granting of an adequate number of licences to private licensees,” it stated.
