Mr D. E, Archer, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington, will shortly take up an appointment as industrial information officer tor the department in Dunedin. Mr R. T. Wright, secretary-executive officer of the Manufacturers' Research Committee. Wellington, is on a visit to Dunedin to facilitate the application of scientific research to manufacturers' problems.

Mr Justice Kennedy will return to Dunedin by express this morning after presiding over the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court in Invercargill. The Public Service Commission has announced the appointment of Mr R. W. Marshall to the position of Trade Commissioner and Commercial Attache to the New Zealand Legation in Washington. For some years Mr Marshall has carried out the duties of director of the New Zealand Supply Mission in Washington. Reference to the death of Mr A. T. Mclndop was made by the Mayor, Mr Cameron, at the civic reception given to Sir William and Lady Williams yesterday. Mr Cameron stated that the late Mr Mclndoe had been an “ intensely sincere and devoted Christian" and that only a few days before his death he had expressed keen anticipation of the visit of Sir William R. Williams. “We shall feel the loss in this city,” said the Mayor. The guests stood' as a mark of respect. During yesterday’s Burnside markets reference was made to the death of the late Mr W. Twaddle. Previous to his retirement Mr Twaddle was attached to Donald Reid and Co. as auctioneer for many years and was a well-known figure among the country community. Mr E. Doogue, on behalf of the Auctioneers' Association, Mr E. Bartlett, of the Master Butchers I 'Association, and Mr A. Murray, on behalf of the farmers and graziers, mentioned the respect in which Mr Twaddle had been held and expressed sympathy with Mr Twaddle's family. Making his first visit to New Zealand for the purpose of visiting all the main ports of the Dominion, Mr Herbert A. Garnett, principal surveyor for Lloyds for Australia and New Zealand, arrived at "Port Chalmers by the Trojan Star from Brisbane yesterday afternoon. Mr Garnett, who took over his duties in Sydney in March, was stationed in London for the previous 10 years, and prior to that represented Lloyds in Kobe, Japan, for six years, superintending the construction of' many Japanese merchant ships. He will remain in Dunedin for a few days before continuing his tour of inspection of vessels in the other principal ports of the country. Passengers who left by air for the north yesterday were Mr H. Staton, Mrs D Ritchie. Mrs J. Ballock, Miss J. Ballock. Mr L. Porteous, Miss D. A. Bradley, Mr H. Power, Mr C. G. Stevens, Mr and Mrs W. Woods (Wellington), Mr F. Turner (Palmerston North)., Those who arrived from the north were Mr Sill, Mr B. Sutcliffe, Mr L. T. Williams, Mr H. Kwok, Mr A. Walden, Mr R. Cox, Mrs E. R. Wills Miss M. Catto. Dr O. Johnston, Mrs D Smith, Mr H. M. Chapman. Mr J. Donald, Mrs J. H. Grant.
