FAT LAMB VALUES FIRM SURPLUS IN CATTLE ENTRY P.A. CHRISTCHURCH. May 28. The store sheep entry at Addington totalled 4300. Apart from sheep from the Chathams, there were few quality sheep in the offering. The entry was drawn from Marlborough, Otago and local sources. Good store sheep and lambs were in fair request at last week’s rates, but there was little interest in inferior types. The varding of lambs was 1680. The inquiry was slack, but tire few good lines met with reasonable competition The top price was 29s for a good Itof of Romneys from Banks Peninsula. Other good lines made from 26s 5d to the top price. Best wether lambs made 23s 6d; good, 16s to 20s; culls, down to 11s. A few pens of two-tooth ewes offered were all from the Chathams. The top price was 35s for a truck of attractive sheep. Others sold at from 29s 9d up. There were 1454 adult ewes. Except for Chathams sheep, little of quality was included. The top price was 30s for a truck of Chathams Romneys »which had been out with Romney rams. Another pen of the same description and mating made 295. The best of the Chathams sheep made from 24s 6d up. Old ewes from other sources made from 14s to 18s for best. Others were down to 9s. Of the 830 wethers offered there was a sound demand for Chathams Romneys at full late rates, but station halfbreds, unless in forward condition, were unwanted. Best Chathams made to 355; medium to good wethers, from 23s 3d to 275, and others down to 12s. The top price was 36s 6d for an outstanding line of twotooths from Banks Peninsula. The fat lamb entry was 2537. The quality was even throughout. Butchers lambs again firmed and to-day were up about Is. Others were fully firm at schedule values. Extra prime fat lambs made from 47s to 51s Id; prime, 40s to 445; good, 34s 6d to 395; medium, 28s to 33s 6d; light, 22s 6d to 275. The fat sheep entry was 6500, drawn from a wide area. The quality was fairly high, but the " tail ” was larger than usual. Ewes were again in keen demand and the rising tendency of the last three weeks continued with overall values about Is higher. Wethers were firm for the first four races, but then an easing set in, and over the concluding sthges the market was inclined to drag. Values: Extra prime heavy wethers made from 44s to 48s Id; prime heavy, 38s to 435; prime medium-weight, 34s to 375; ordinary and light, 26s to 325. Extra prime maiden ewes made to 36s 7d; prime heavy, 26s 6d to 32s Id; prime medium, 23s 6d to 265: ordinary, 19s to 22s Id; light and unfinished, 10s to 18s. The fat cattle entry was 620. larger than required The sale was steady throughout for the best at last week s rates, but unattractive and unfinished sorts were hard to quit. Best beef made to 60s per 1001 b; good, 45s to 52s 6d; medium, 35s to 40s. Best cow beef made to 36s 6d; secondary, to 31s 6d. Values; Extra prime heavy steers made from £24 to £27 7s 6d; prime heavy", £l9 10s to £23; prime medium-weight, £l7 to £l9; ordinary and light, £l4 to £l6 10s. Extra prime heifers made from £l7 to £2O 2s 6d; prime, £l2 10s to £l6; ordinary and light, £8 to £l2. Extra prime cows made from £l4 10s to £lB 12s 6d; prime, £lO to £l3 10s; ordinary and light. £6 to £9 10s. The porker entry in the fat pig section was smaller and the quality was again mixed. Good pigs advanced 4s to ss, but plain and unfinished sorts dragged at last week’s rates. Choppers were in medium supply and the sale was good at full recent rates. The bacon entry was about the same as last week’s. Competition was spirited with values as good as recently. Light and unfinished porkers made from 47s 6d to 54s 6d; medium, £3 4s 6d to £3 17s 6d; heavy. £4 2s 6d to £4 14s 6d. Choppers made from £7 18s' 6d to £ls Is; light baconers, £5 2s 6d to £5 9s 6d; medium, £5 14s 6d to £5 19s 6d; heavy. £6 8s 6d to £6 18s 6d; extra heavy, £7 3s 6d to £7 9s 6d. The average per lb was 93d to IOJd.
