CLOSING ORDER
INSANITARY AND DANGEROUS BUILDINGS CONCERN FOR TENANTS Unless they can find other accommodation, five families' in Dunedin will be without homes, in the near future as the result of a decision by the City Council last night, j “This is one of those sad cases where families have to be turned out into the street,” remarked Cr Walls, M.P., when consideration was given the issuirfg of a closing order on the owner of insanitary and dangerous buildings at 32 to 42 Glasgow street. It was stated that the owner had failed to comply with the council notice on March 10 requiring repairs and renovations to the premises. “ I know, the condition of these buildings,” continued Cr Walls, “but at a time like this, when the people have no homes to go to, I do not like turning them out without making some provision for them.” The buildings were not only insanitary, but in a dangerous condition structurally, said Cr Ireland. If they collapsed, someone would be responsible. Action to serve a closing order on the owner was being taken advisedly. Cr Ireland proposed that the recommendation of the chief sanitary inspector, that a closing order be issued, should be adopted. “It is to be hoped that the serving of the order will make the landlord do something about repairing the buildings,” commented the Mayor. Mr Cameron. • , •-< Seconding the resolution. Cr Hudson. M.P.. said the premises were.definitely dangerous, part of the walls having already collapsed. Two of the tenants had obtained other accommodation, but some provision would have to be made for the other three. • The motion _to serve the closing order was carried.
