OPALTOWN DROPS DEAD Special TIMARU, May 25. Flying Orders was smartest out in the Fairlie Handicap, with Mysterious Melody soon handy, while after two furlongs Wantwood, Lady Fane and Whitley were next, Our Bob joining in at the home turn. Flying Orders was well clear when the straight was reached, but Wantwood had his measure 100 yards from the post and scored decisively. Our Bob was second 50 yards from home, but weakened, Flying Orders beating him In the last stride. Whitley was close up. with Sanskrit and Chellow Dene next. Pukaki Hurdles Big Top was handy all the way in the Pukaki Hurdles. He and Forage toox charge after half a mile, with Olga's Choice and Court Dress next. Big Top drew clear along the back, Kassai and Lisheen moving up. Big Top ran down the last two hurdles, but held his place, winning easily. Court Dress wore Forage down in the last bit. Olga’s Choice and Lisheen were next. Opaltown, . who showed up part of the way, dropped dead after passing the winning post. Southburn Handicap Dress Rehearsal soon opened out a gap from Wild Note in the Southburn Hack Handicap. The leader collapsed in the straight, where Lorna Leigh and Nighl Blush moved up, Lorna Leigh winning by a length. Wild Note held on for third, with Connaught and Mestiza well clear of the others. Cralgmore Steeples Trisune ran off at the first fence in the Craigmore Steeplechase. French Knight led Great Legend and Irish Wit for over a round, but they were in line at the stand double with a round to go. where W J Hillis made a great recovery when French Knight blundered and lost ground. Great Legend and Irish Wit went on together, Appeasement being handy at the third last fence. He and Great Legend were together at the last fence, and Appeasement just won. French Knight finished well for third, with Irish Wit tiring to a moderate fourth. Commemorate baulked and lost his rider at the stand double with a round to go. Temuka Handicap Copper Coin was smartest out in the Temuka Handicap, and though she ran wide turning into the straight, she never looked in serious danger of being caught. Lady Melrose was unlucky. After being slow away, she came home fast for second, with Pandemonium overhauling a strung-out field for third. Siegtone and Early Night were the best of the others. Responsive, the win favourite, lost her chance when she began slowly, while Penetrate ran into trouble early. Wai-lti Trot Arawa Lad led Our Babe and Final Return most of the way in the Wai-iti Trot, but Our Babe moved up in the straight and won easily from Sure Catch, with Arawa Lad tiring to third and Final Return fourth. Winchester Trot Palava led most of the way in the Winchester Trot and won decisively from Captain Sandy, who was always prominent. while Glenwellyn finished on for third.
