WAR-TIME OPERATION

POLICE AMONG COMMUNISTS INVESTIGATION OF SYSTEM Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, May 19. The World Telegram in a copyright story says that during the war, the New York Police Department planted 28 detectives and policemen in the Communist Party. The under-cover precautions began in 1939, when Russia was on friendly terms with Germany. The police made no arrests but aimed at learning the inside working and plans of the party and keeping track of its leaders and members. “ Under-cover men worked at Communist Party headquarters, wrote for the Communist newspaper, Daily Worker, became Communist branch organisers, represented the party at conventions and even led Communist rallies,” states the article. “ One detective won such a high degree of trust in the party that it sent him as a courier to Portugal, where he delivered a secret message to the International Comintern agent in Lisbon.” Towards the end of this “sabotage squad’s” existence, the Communists discovered the police background of most of the under-cover operators and expelled them from the party. How the party became aware of the police operations is still a mystery.
