HIGHER PRICES

IMPORTED TOBACCOS

WITHDRAWAL OF SUBSIDY

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Imported cigarette and pipe tobaccos landed in New Zealand after April 30 will cost merchants and, in consequence, the public, more than the present ruling prices.

This development results from the Government’s decision, notified to Christchurch wholesale merchants and importers to-day, that the subsidies on such tobaccos were withdrawn as from April 30. The subsidies, which standardised the price of imported tobaccos at 3s 9d for 2oz, must mean an increase in retail prices.
