“THE ROAD TO ANARCHY ”
Sir,—lf the statistics department is responsible for Mr Silverstone’s coalmining figures, then I am surprised that this department should publish without explanation figures which do not mean what plainly they do mean. What is it Mr Silverstone hopes to prove? Is it that coal miners work harder now than they did in 1932? Nobody believes that. Miners themselves do not make that claim. Ask a miner if he works harder than he did in 1932, or than miners did in 1932, and he will regard you as a person of weak intellect to expect such a thing. If the individual output really is higher than it was in 1932, other circumstances —such as open-cast excavation—which Mr Silverstone will' not discuss, are accountable for it.—l am, etc., Short of Coal. [Mr Silverstone and " Matilda" may reply briefly on points raised in recent letters: otherwise this correspondence is closed.—Ed.. O.D.T.]
